Core Idea: Job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction are created by different factors.

Hygiene factors

  • These are factors which should be present by default in an environment for the person to NOT be dissatisfied. However the presence of these factors will not motivate the person.
  • They are essential for creating a comfortable work environment but don’t directly contribute to higher job satisfaction.
  • Examples: Company policy, supervision, working conditions, salary, personal life, status, security

Motivators

  • These are factors which motivate the person to perform well and become satisfied of his environment. The absence of these motivators will not dissatisfy the person, simply he will be in a state of no satisfaction and no dissatisfaction also.
  • Examples: Achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement, growth
