AWS Systems Manager Summary

What is AWS Systems Manager?

  • AWS Systems Manager is a secure end-to-end management solution for hybrid and multicloud environments that enables secure operations at scale. It is the operations hub for your AWS applications and resources.

How Systems Manager Works

  1. Access Systems Manager: Choose one of the available options to access Systems Manager.
  2. Choose a Systems Manager capability: Determine which capability can help you perform the action you want on your resources.
  3. Verification and processing: Systems Manager verifies that you have the required permissions to perform the action.
    • If the action’s target is a managed node, the Systems Manager Agent (SSM Agent) running on the node performs the action.
    • For other resources, Systems Manager performs the action or communicates with other AWS services to perform the action.
  4. Reporting: Systems Manager, SSM Agent, and other AWS services report status.
  5. Systems Manager operations management capabilities: Operations management capabilities, like Explorer, OpsCenter, and Incident Manager, aggregate operational data or create artifacts in response to events or errors.
    • These capabilities provide operational insight into your applications and resources and offer automated remediation solutions for troubleshooting problems.
